Incense, polish from church pews, and damp plaster walls. Burning candles, the roses and lilies before Mary – a scent of hope and solace. They make me silent and devout. There is something greater here!

‘Cleanse your hands’, or simply delight in the scent of ‘hope and solace’. Together with fragrance historian Caro Verbeek and soap maker Sanne Groenenveld, I have endeavoured to summon up the scent of Mary in a piece of soap.
